Location: Raleigh, NC (Hybrid: 2 days in-office/3 remote). Will require flexibility if more days in the office are needed on certain weeks and may require occasional travel to the organization's second office location in Charlotte, NC.

Position Summary

The Senior Director of Human Resources and Staff Experience is responsible for managing the operations, policies, and systems that govern the employee lifecycle at NCAAT. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role will manage compensation and benefits, recruiting, employee relations, labor and employment compliance, performance management, people analytics, total well-being, and PEO and vendor management. 

  

Key Responsibilities

People Operations Management

  • Foster effective internal communication to ensure employees feel informed, heard, and connected to the organization’s mission
  • Streamline people processes by developing and implementing efficient HR systems, including onboarding, performance management, and feedback loops
  • Provide strategic HR guidance by partnering with leadership to align people strategies with organizational objectives and future growth
  • Act as a trusted advisor to employees and leadership, offering guidance and support on conflict resolution related to formal or informal complaints, team dynamics, and organizational alignment
  • Manage all additional staff relationships, including contractors, interns, and fellows

 

Human Resources Administration and Compliance

  • Oversee employee lifecycle, including hiring, onboarding, retention, and transitions, contributing to a smooth and supportive experience throughout employees’ tenure with the organization
  • Oversee payroll and manage the payroll vendor
  • Support staff and supervisors with questions regarding benefits enrollment, benefit functions, and workplace policies and procedures as needed
  • Facilitate internal communications regarding benefit updates and changes
  • Create, operationalize, and maintain policies and procedures for federal, state, and municipal compliance, including but not limited to ADA compliance, EEO regulations, employee leave, internal investigations, and other legal compliance matters (with support from legal counsel as needed)

Staff and Organizational Culture

  • Partner with Executive Leadership to design and implement programs and practices that drive employee engagement and satisfaction, promote recognition, belonging, and continuous learning and improvement
  • Champion leadership and professional development by creating frameworks for training, skill-building, and career progression
  • Lead organizational culture initiatives by designing and implementing strategies that foster and sustain a positive, inclusive, mission-driven, and values-driven workplace culture
  • Assess and advance employee engagement and satisfaction
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by embedding DEI principles into the organization’s practices, policies, and culture

 

Other Functions

  • Attend weekly executive team meetings to provide guidance on HR and compliance as the team navigates organization-wide decision-making
  • Oversee the policy creation process, including facilitating meetings of the Collaborative Advisory Team (CAT), accepting staff feedback on policy changes, and sharing final drafts with the executive team for review

Qualifications

Key Qualifications & Experience

  • Significant management experience (5+ years), particularly supervising professional staff in a fast-paced environment, in areas including but not limited to Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, operations, human resources, strategic planning, nonprofit financial management, and/or nonprofit governance. Experience in a grassroots nonprofit environment is a plus
  • Proven ability and a vision for building an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace, where all staff feel a sense of belonging in both a remote and in-person environment
  • Builds authentic relationships across lines of difference, such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, gender identity, citizenship status, or other identities. Enthusiasm for meeting and engaging with staff. Able to put people at ease, especially across lines of difference. Listens closely to understand needs or concerns and takes action based on that input

  • Proven track record of creating, modeling, and operating within team cultures that allow people to do their best work, feel safe and supported, and have a sense of belonging
  • Experience implementing management best practices, including caring for and getting the best out of people in both a remote and in-person environment
  • Tact, diplomacy, and a collaborative spirit in interacting with staff, Boards of Directors, and external partners
  • Experience in improving organizational systems and preparing departments to utilize them with rapidly shifting organizational demands
  • A self-starter with a strong initiative who, beyond directing current systems, has the willingness to identify additional processes that could be streamlined and the skills to realize that vision
  • Manages competing priorities with composure and models professional integrity, adaptability, and ethical decision-making

  • Society of Human Resources Management certification preferred  

Baseline Skills

  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Project Management Software, and Slack
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and patience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Comfortability with technology and virtual communication systems, including Zoom, Google Hangouts, etc.
  • Ability to work nontraditional hours during election cycles.
